A little Humble pie anyone???

I had the recent experience of getting to work on a show that was produced by a local ministry. The event was quite a large one and had multiple facilities and big names. Now if you don’t know what I do for a living that is fine, but during an event like this I do the setups and a lot of backstage and behind the scenes.  Now for my own personal lifestyle choices I will have to say I didn’t expect to see the things I did on this event. I’ve always been scared of big churches and large events that use God as the vehicle. You can’t always trust the motives of those behind them and although I think a lot of the information being put out was good, I got to see sides of people I didn’t expect. The almighty dollar always seems to reign supreme to even the most spiritual.  Religion has a bad rap nowadays and there is usually a huge “BOO!!!” when all you hear are churches asking for money, etc. Then for many to see an event like this where a lot of unnecessary money is spent and you still hear them asking for an offering after people just had to shell out a good bit to get in is just shameful. Now from the inside I know why I give and I know what I believe and I know the truth. But what kind of example does such a large organization set when they do things like this? You start to wonder if their heart is in the right place or is it all just an act. I don’t want to, but sometimes I must believe that a large church has become nothing more than a popular large business consumed by money and what it can do. One that is used for personal gain and profit rather than furthering the plan Jesus gave to his disciples. These disciples bled and died to further the name of Christ in the places no one wanted them. But how well does a posh church do this when they are in a nice building with A/C and on the corner of Rich and Prosperous.

I mean who am I to talk, I’m no different. But I look at myself in the mirror and question my own motives. I get taken back when I see people being escorted by the police from one venue to another and expensive catering and all the fixings on fancy smancy rented furniture and wonder….don’t they know that Jesus was humble? Are there not people struggling and probably in their own congregation? A carpenter nailed to a cross and washed his own disciple’s feet! He never had a fancy motorcade and a nice house with servants and first class everything. So that leaves the question: “is this serving God?” I don’t know… I guess that’s a question we all have to ask ourselves. No one person can answer this; I guess it all goes back to the heart. Is this how Christ drew in his crowds? By lavish theatrics, and pre-staged healings. Did he focus all his attention on one group, or kind of people? Or did he seek the lost and weary. Did Jesus travel to the rich lands to get a following so he could get more money and have a bigger church, so the pastor could drive a nicer car and wear a better suit? Or did he speak on the importance or faith rather than money?!?! But here we are as a society shunning the weak and poor, our churches overrun with corruption and self indulgence. Don’t be fooled people. God loves the church but we are “the Church.” The building you go to on Sundays in just a building, and more and more of these buildings are disgusting and filthy with greed and malnutrition. The body of Christ has become a blinged out, anorexic, unfaithful mess.

Beware of the lies this world has to offer, a powerful speaker can convince many but a strong faith can move mountains. Stay in the word and feed off the bible and not just your local congregation. A growing church is not always a healthy church, tumors grow and the cancer spreads just like the lies of the enemy. The enemies’ lies are never obvious and he will attract you easily with many fancy things. But they are not always true. Jesus was faithful, but humble, and if we are to live like him we have to follow his example and not the Guy whose name is on the church wall, and certainly not always the guy behind the pulpit.

Jeremiah 29:13 you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

"so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:11
